CLAT vs JEE, NEET, UPSC, CAT, CUET, NDA, CA & IPMAT: Which Exam Is Toughest?
Choosing between India’s major competitive exams is not simply about identifying which examination is “toughest.” CLAT, JEE, NEET, CUET, NDA, CA Foundation and IPMAT are taken at or around the undergraduate-entry stage but test very different abilities. CAT and UPSC Civil Services belong to a later, graduate-level stage.
So, is CLAT tougher than JEE? Is NEET harder than CLAT? Is CLAT more difficult than CUET or IPMAT?
Overall, CLAT is less academically deep than JEE Advanced or NEET, but it is highly demanding because of reading speed, reasoning, accuracy, current affairs and time pressure. CLAT 2027 consists of 120 questions to be completed in 120 minutes, with 0.25 marks deducted for every incorrect answer. Consortium of NLUs – CLAT 2027 Syllabus

Difficulty Graph: CLAT vs Other Competitive Exams
A higher score represents greater overall difficulty based on syllabus depth, question complexity, competition, preparation demands and examination pressure. It does not mean every individual question in a higher-rated examination is harder.
Number of Applicants & Competition
Applicant numbers help students understand the scale of competition.
| Exam | Recent Registration Reference |
|---|---|
| CLAT UG 2026 | ~75,000 |
| JEE Main 2026 | 16.04 lakh unique candidates |
| JEE Advanced 2026 | 1.87 lakh |
| NEET UG 2026 | ~22.79 lakh |
| CAT 2025 | ~2.95 lakh |
| CUET UG 2026 | 15.69 lakh |
| IPMAT Indore | ~30,000 in a recent cycle |
NTA reported 16,04,854 unique JEE Main 2026 registrations, approximately 22.79 lakh NEET UG 2026 registrations, and 15,68,866 CUET UG 2026 registrations. NTA – JEE Main, NTA – NEET, NTA – CUET
However, applicant numbers alone do not determine difficulty. Seat availability, cut-offs and the quality of competition matter too.
1. CLAT vs JEE Main: Which Is Tougher?
JEE Main is generally tougher in syllabus depth, particularly because it demands strong Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics preparation.
CLAT requires much less advanced mathematics. Its difficulty comes from rapidly reading passages, identifying arguments, interpreting information and making accurate decisions.
2. CLAT vs JEE Advanced: Which Is Tougher?
JEE Advanced is substantially harder in pure academic and problem-solving difficulty. Questions can combine multiple concepts and demand deep understanding of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
In JEE Advanced 2026, 1,87,389 candidates registered and 1,79,694 appeared in both papers. JEE Advanced 2026
Verdict: JEE Advanced > CLAT in overall academic difficulty.
3. CLAT vs NEET UG: Which Is Tougher?
NEET demands a large Physics, Chemistry and Biology syllabus along with high accuracy. CLAT requires less subject memorisation but more comprehension, reasoning and passage analysis.
| Skill | CLAT | NEET |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | ★★★★★ | ★★★☆☆ |
| Reasoning | ★★★★★ | ★★★☆☆ |
| Memory | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★★★ |
| Calculation | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★★☆ |
| Accuracy Pressure | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★★ |
Verdict: NEET is tougher in syllabus volume, scientific depth and competition; CLAT is more reading and reasoning-intensive.
4. CLAT vs UPSC Civil Services
This is not a direct comparison for Class 12 students.
CLAT is an undergraduate law entrance examination, whereas UPSC Civil Services is a graduate-level recruitment examination involving Prelims, Mains and Personality Test.
UPSC has a much broader syllabus and a significantly longer selection process.
Verdict: UPSC is considerably tougher overall, but students cannot directly choose UPSC instead of CLAT after Class 12. A CLAT aspirant can complete a law degree and later attempt UPSC.
5. CLAT vs CAT
CAT is also primarily a post-graduation-entry comparison rather than a direct Class 12 alternative.
CAT tests Quantitative Aptitude, VARC and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning. CLAT places more emphasis on legal reasoning, current affairs and passage-based comprehension.
Verdict: CAT has greater quantitative and data-reasoning difficulty, while CLAT requires more legal reasoning and GK preparation.
6. CLAT vs CUET UG
This is one of the most relevant comparisons for +1 and +2 students. CUET UG is used for undergraduate admissions across participating universities and can involve language, domain subjects and aptitude components depending on the chosen programme.
CLAT is more specialised and strongly reasoning-oriented.
Verdict: CLAT is usually harder in reading, reasoning and time management. CUET difficulty depends heavily on the selected subjects and target course.
7. CLAT vs NDA
NDA difficulty goes beyond the written test. Candidates also face SSB assessment and medical/physical requirements.
CLAT has no equivalent physical or SSB selection stage.
Verdict: Considering the complete selection process, NDA is tougher overall, while CLAT demands significantly greater legal and passage-based reasoning.
8. CLAT vs CA Foundation
This comparison is especially useful for Commerce students.
CA Foundation covers Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics. ICAI specifies a 0.25-mark negative marking in its objective papers. ICAI
CLAT focuses more strongly on comprehension, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and current affairs.
Verdict: Students strong in reading and arguments may find CLAT more suitable; students strong in Accounts and Commerce may prefer CA Foundation.
9. CLAT vs IPMAT
Both are relevant prestigious pathways after Class 12.
IPMAT Indore places substantially greater emphasis on Quantitative Ability, whereas CLAT focuses more heavily on reading, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and current affairs.
Its limited IIM intake also makes IPMAT highly competitive.
Verdict: IPMAT is generally tougher quantitatively; CLAT is tougher in legal reasoning, GK and sustained passage reading.

10. Which Exam Should You Choose?
The “toughest exam” is not necessarily the best exam for you.
Choose primarily according to your career goal:
| Career Goal | Recommended Exam |
|---|---|
| Law | CLAT |
| Engineering | JEE |
| Medicine | NEET |
| General UG programmes | CUET |
| Defence | NDA |
| Chartered Accountancy | CA Foundation |
| Management after Class 12 | IPMAT |
| MBA after graduation | CAT |
| Civil Services after graduation | UPSC |
CLAT’s unique challenge is the combination of reading speed, legal and logical reasoning, current affairs, accuracy, negative marking and competition for NLU seats.
